I also generally prefer reading text to listening, but as you said audio is great for musical topics: you can seamlessly incorporate the examples into the discussion. "Watermelon Man" is a favorite of mine -- I used to play in a funk band that for quite a while opened its second set with our version of the Headhunters arrangement. I didn't know where the intro came from so this is a revelation for me. I loved your audio segment of the African source; also the alluring song from New Guinea. Thanks.

There's a whole fascinating back story to the Voices of the Rain Forest album. Steven Feld had done some typical ethnomusicological field recordings, one mic and a suitcase-size tape recorder. Then Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead got interested in his work and offered to bankroll a really high-end thing with a whole crew, multiple mics, mixing and editing tin the Dead's studio. So it's the rare scholarly recording that has all this production value.
